Asking why a parent never opened the new thread
9 June 2026
A school-parent app had added a dedicated thread for sports days. Teachers were proud of it. In interviews, several parents said they still used the old broadcast because that was where the class teacher already wrote, and they did not want a second place to miss a message.
The people who used the new thread were easy to find in the event list. The people who never opened it were not. We had to ask the school for introductions, with care about consent, and sit with the discomfort of a ten-minute call that ends in “I did not see it.”
A feature adoption study that only speaks to fans will flatter the release. At least two interviews should be with people who had a chance to see the door and walked past it. Their reasons are usually ordinary: another screen, another habit, another person in the family who holds the phone.
